Namaqua Braai & Suidwester Butchery

What does one take along when visiting remote Hondeklipbaai, and what can you buy on location? Many a tourist have arrived in town, believing that the town would not have a butchery. The truth is that Hondeklipbaai has a really good German butcher, capable of making some of the best cold meats and smoked bacon I have ever tasted. Due to the sparse population count of the town, these items are not always available, but if you phone ahead to place your order, you can be certain of truly delightful taste sensations. Why not place your orders for biltong and dry wors while you're at it?

When visiting remote locations, one should never expect fully stocked shelves with the varieties available in big cities and towns. However, with a little forward planning, and by contacting the local butcher, you can make sure that what you require will be in stock on your arrival.

Willem, from the Suidwester Butchery and Bakery is even happy to stock your favourite cheeses, of you let him know in time what you are looking for.

Wood is very scarce in Namaqualand. Yet, there are a number of people in town who goes out of their way to collect wood from all over, to make sure that you can build a proper wood fire to braai your meat on. Wood is also available from the butchery.

Bread is baked fresh daily on the premises, so be sure to ask about this as well. Looking for the perfect garlic bread? Speak to Willem and he will order it for you from one of the locals. This also holds true for any other bakery requirements you may have. Specialty items are available in town, on request, as the town boasts a number of first rate bakers.

Packaged dry meats are available in stock, but special Karoo lamb, or even Namaqua mutton, can be ordered on request.

Forgot to phone ahead, or ended up in town on a whim? No problem. The most basic cuts will be available in store.

Having visited the beautiful surrounds and seen the spectacular scenery, it is time to settle down with a couple of steaks and chops next to a wood fire.

Bon appetit!
